The Power of Perseverance

Things Mark learned while talking to himself. What happens when the thing you were designed to do is taken away from you — and what it takes to go get it back.

Mark Wade speaking to a live audience

What happened

What if something completely took away your life's work?

Not slowed it down. Took it. Left you searching for a new reason to get up in the morning. What would you do — give up, or retire early?

Mark Wade had been a full-time professional ventriloquist for four decades when essential tremor — a genetic disorder — began making his hands and other extremities shake uncontrollably. For a man whose living runs entirely through his hands, that is not an inconvenience. It is the end of the career.

He refused to accept that it was. He went looking for a solution and found one: deep brain stimulation — a procedure in which electrodes are implanted in the brain and connected to a generator. It worked. The hospital filmed the procedure so that other patients could see what was possible for them.

And because Mark is Mark, the other half of the solution was to find the funny in it. He laughed the problem down to a size he could carry.

Perseverance is the key. It was the answer for Mark — and it's the answer for your people too.

What your group takes away

Funny first. Then it lands.

This is not a medical talk and it is not a pity story. It is a professional entertainer using forty years of comedy timing to tell an audience something true about adversity — and the laughs are what make it stick.

  • How to use humour to survive a setback — a practical skill, not a personality trait.
  • What perseverance actually looks like day to day, when the obvious move is to quit.
  • How to keep going when you get thrown a curve — at work, at home, and in life.
  • Why the search matters more than the answer — Mark's solution existed because he refused to stop looking for it.

Mark has messages built for adult and corporate groups, and separate ones designed for children's conferences. He has also spoken several times at the International Ventriloquists' ConVENTion.
